Atom efficient PtCu bimetallic catalysts and ultra dilute alloys for the selective hydrogenation of furfural

A range of Pt:Cu bimetallic nanoparticles were investigated for the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation furfural, an important platform biomass feedstock. Alloying two metals had a profound effect on overall catalytic activity, providing superior rates reaction and achieving needed high selectivity towards furfuryl alcohol. Furthermore, we activity Ultra Dilute Alloy (UDA) formed via galvanic replacement Cu atoms by Pt dispersed host (atomic ratio 1:20). This UDA, after overcoming induction period, exhibits exceptionally initial under modest hydrogen pressures 10 20 bar, rivalling turnover monometallic (containing 12 times more Pt), outdoing pure or other compositions nanoparticle alloy catalysts. These atom efficient catalysts are ideal candidates valorization furfural due to their vastly greater economic viability.
